Etymology is the study of word origins. It's a fascinating subject, full of folklore and historical lessons. The site owner is David Wilton (Albany, CA), for whom etymology is only a hobby; but it's a real nice site.

ELEMENTS OF STYLE
This is the best little book on writing style I've ever seen. It costs about $11. It's intended for use in English courses in which the practice of composition is combined with the study of literature. It aims to give in brief space the principal requirements of plain English style.
